Radio Free Europe

Here it is, the censorship theme that i always, err, respected. I was 6, 7 years of age and the whole family was listening to Radio Free Europe. It was one of the coolest things for a kid, to keep a secret, tell nobody about it, not even my best friend. We once paid a visit to this Hungarian friend of my father, and the friend’s old man was quite a character. I can remember only his trembling hands looking for the walking stick. A siamese cat was at his feet, trying to make his standing up even more difficult but joyous too. The old man went to this huge radio from the 50s with 2 big knobs and buttons. Slowly pushed the ‘on’ button and the room was full of this beautiful melody. I recognised it slowly, it was the intro tune of a show on Radio Free Europe. Amazement got replaced by panic and i started to ‘shhhhh’ to everyone. Someone needs to tell the old man is too loud. It’s not good. Irgh. People calmed me down explaining to me they’re friends. We weren’t the only people listening to it. It was frankly, everybody. Less the bad people. The secret still needed to be kept though. At that moment i realised my best friend could have been one of the listeners. In time i made the connection with the lots of western toys he owned, he had someone abroad, it was his dad! So he must’ve listened. Yes, he must have. But i never asked him, the risks were to high. Once i went to his place to play with cowboys and indians, and the radio was playing in my head. Americans, Indians, Germans, Romanians all shooting with pistols, highjacking trains full of gold, drinking bear at the Saloon, riding giraffes and lions. Chain shooting was best: The bad soldier kills the only girl toy we had, the waitress. The bad soldier is shot by the good soldier, who’s run over by a tractor, who’s smashed by the train. The conductor shot by and on and on. There was no point for me to stress him out, sharing secrets around. In the end it was about his dad. He might never see him if the bad people find out about the radio. We both kept the same secret from eachother. Just like everybody.

Getting into writing

Aug 2010

After 2 years of uploading random stuff on my blog, i think i finally got the energy to follow a subject thoroughly.
I tried first to blog about learning to ride a bicycle, then about the neighbours’ cats. It never caught on. I thought the iphone might be expensive enough to make do something with it, but it looks like the ipad hooked me on writing. I was also inspired by Julie and Julia. The movie about a government worker writing her first blog. Seeing last night was quite overwhelming, so many similarities with real life people around me, myself included. I also made a full first issue of a Romanian diaspora magazine. It was 2008, the year the world stood still. Everybody loved Culturo. Nobody was willing to put a dime in it though.
Also, had an eye accident a few years ago, and since then, my vision is not exactly perfect. I can read the smallest line of the test, but the quality is not the same. I see this flare, a reflexion of the scar left after this guy poked my eye with his finger, trying to make a steal on the bball court. A strange switch was activated, i suddenly started thinking about the visual prevalence of my work, art and hobbies. Suddenly text gained a new aura, it was that what if? Like the image didn’t worth a thousand words anymore. So that’s how i chose to do my graduate thesis theme abou type in film. That could’ve been a nice subject for a blog too.

I reckon all these things got me thinking about writing, but the misterious dissapearance of a poster i stuck at work got me actually writing.

As this was censored today, i thought it’s time to publish it. A 13 year old girl came around our desks as she was doing a bit of work experience. And everybody was like, omg you cannot have swearing on the walls. So my precious F word was marked out. :( I need to research how cinema rating works. I’m sure 12+ can handle a bit of tough talk.
